Coming from a background in theatre and playwriting, I approach my teaching with an emphasis on each student’s internal, natural creativity and voice. I believe in the power of writing—whether academic or creative (or both!)—to develop critical thinking, observation, empathy, and self.
At Columbia University, I taught in the University Writing program, which prepares first-year students for academic writing at the college level. I chose to teach this course through the theme of Film & Performing Arts, programming outings to Broadway and off-Broadway shows, assigning contemporary and classic films, and emphasizing media literacy.
I have also taught extensive Playwriting courses and workshops for high school and university students both in the United States and internationally, including with Columbia University, the New South Young Playwrights Conference, and TUMO Armenia.
In addition to rigorous hands-on training, I obtained the Advanced Teaching Certificate from Columbia’s Center for Teaching and Learning in 2024, and was named a Lead Teaching Fellow in 2023. In my teaching development, I have emphasized feedback models for arts students, writing pedagogy grounded in education research, embodied learning curricula, and have supported students from a variety of academic and personal backgrounds.
As a playwright and theatremaker, my recognitions include: the Synecdoche Works’ Frank Moffett Mosier Fellowship for Works in Heightened Language; Semifinalist for the Lanford Wilson New American Play Festival; Winner of the Players Club of Swarthmore New Play Festival; selected for the Valdez Theater Conference; Finalist for the Emerson Stages NewFest New Play Workshop; Finalist for the Circle in the Square Theatre School Emerging Writer’s Residency. I also wrote the 5-episode serialized mystery podcast, “Process”, which will be released in spring 2024.
I hold a B.A. in Playwriting from Brown University, and an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Columbia University.
